The church is constructed on the location of a Roman fort, where two Roman altars were uncovered in 1925, integrated into the tower. Three incomplete Anglo-Saxon stone crosses from the 8th century, which were once located in the churchyard, are now housed inside, beneath the tower. The oldest section of the church is the south doorway, dating back to the 13th century. The nave originates from the 14th century, while the tower was built in the 15th century. Between 1860 and 1861, the church underwent extensions and restorations by the architects Mallinson & Healey from Bradford. In 1927, the vestry was enlarged and later transformed into a war memorial chapel after the conclusion of the Second World War. The church received a grade II* listing on 18 July 1949.[1]
